Ancestral Home -- Landsberg an der Warthe
Old postcard of Landsberg/W.
Landsberg an der Warthe (on the Warta River), formerly an important Prussian city, is now Gorzów Wielkopolski in western Poland. It had about 130,000 inhabitants in 2023.
Many Böttcher ancestors are from Landsberg/Warthe or small villages on its outskirts. Landsberg/W. became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701. In 1815, after the Napoleonic Wars, it became part of Prussia's province of Brandenburg. Then from 1818 to 1945 the surrounding area, including all these villages, became a county as well as a city. In 1871, the city/county became part of the German Empire when the Prussians led the unification of Germany. After World War II (1945) the Three Powers (U.S., U.K. and Russia) gave most of the huge Brandenburg district to Poland. Millions of Germans were expelled. However, many Böttchers had moved in the early 1900’s to the German capital, Berlin.
